Pressurised foul drain at hotel in Buckinghamshire

TJ Environmental Services have recently been involved in a long term project to determine the location and outlet of a pressurised foul drain running from a large 150 bedroom hotel in Buckinghamshire.

We were called in when the sewage pumps developed problems and the pump station was flooded. This was determined to be due to a blockage in the drain. Despite exhaustive enquiries, no one was able to advise us where the outlet of the drain was.

This resulted in a drain trace and dig exercise, cleaning and CCTV surveying at each step to determine the location of the drain. Some 13 excavations had to be undertaken to achieve this. It was believed that the last section of the drain was installed under a private road, so to minimise intrusion, ground radar techniques were utilised proving very effective. The outlet was eventually found some 1.6 miles away from the hotel pump station!

The drain was cleaned and surveyed throughout its entire length, and then repaired using thermo welding techniques. The drain was returned to the hotel, and no problems have been experienced since.

This was an interesting contract for TJ Environmental Services which required a wide range of specialism’s all working together, High pressure water jetting, drain tracing, excavations, ground radar, CCTV drain surveys, thermo welding repair and finally reinstatement.

Cess pool tank investigations for Transco

TJ Environmental recently undertook Cess pool tank investigations for Transco at their Eastbourne depot, following a sudden upsurge in emptying requirements were requested. The tank which had previously only been emptied every three months, suddenly was filling within a week.

TJ Environmental Services undertook a CCTV survey of all inlets into the tank and associated drains to check for water ingress, plus a confined space entry into the tank to check tank wall condition, inlets and outlets.

After all of this investigation the problem was found to be with a faulty urinal cistern! This case demonstrates that basic preventative maintenance is always cost effective in the long run.

Industrial clean up operation following a serious tank failure

TJ Environmental Services were involved in a major clean up operation following a serious tank failure at a solvent storage site.

An estimated 70,000 litres of waste solvent escaped from a tank following a catastrophic rupture during the night. Under the direction of the local fire brigade, TJ Environmental Services assisted in the clean up operation using high pressure washing and vacuum tankers. Solid residues were loaded into 205 litre drums and open top IBC’s for carriage and disposal

The entire operation which took several days was undertaken to the complete satisfaction of the Environment Agency and the site operator, who could have faced far more serious and costly consequences, had it not been for the swift response

Confined space and tank cleaning contracts

We have recently been involved in a number of confined space and tank cleaning contracts including Chelsea and Kensington Council required the cleaning and removal of 2 redundant fuel oil tanks located in the basement of a leisure centre.

TJ Environmental Services were involved in the cleaning of the tanks, and the subsequent cutting for removal. The tanks were cleaned using high pressure water jetting techniques, and then on removal of arrisings, were rag dried to ensure removal of all flammable liquid residue.

On completion of cleaning and the issue of a gas free certificate and a safe for hot work certificate, the tanks were cut into manageable pieces, that totalled 9 tonnes. Tank dismantling was achieved using plasma cutting techniques. Each piece had to be carried up to street level to be taken away.

This contract required a high level of health and safety considerations as access to the tanks was very limited in addition to being underground. Forced air movers were utilised to maintain a healthy air supply, even during the cutting of the tanks

Despite the difficult conditions, the job was completed to the satisfaction of the client and without any Health and Safety incidents.

An industrial cleaning contract for the National Trust

TJ Environmental Services have recently been involved in an industrial cleaning contract for the National Trust, involving an oil spill into a large pond in Sussex. The contamination was noted by local residents after a prolonged period of heavy rain. Investigations into the cause of the pollution were undertaken by The Environment Agency, The Highways Agency and the National Trust.

TJ Environmental Services were involved in deployed oil containment booms, oil absorbents and cutting back vegetation around the side of the pond. It was only through the deployment of a number of containment booms, that the pollution was prevented from going down stream and threatening local fish farms.
